Joyriders Desaru Expedition May 2010

‘Masochistic Cycling’ through a Rookie’s Eyes

a.k.a The Joyriders, dey must-a be krazy.

I could’ve sworn there was a conspiracy that day. There was a head wind wherever we went, terrain as hilly as an ECG graph (which probably does the same to our heart rates!) and the sun beaming a sadistic smile! At the Desaru Golf Course, I wondered, “Who would be crazy enough to tee off in this blistering weather?” Then I realized we had close to 50 cyclists tackling 110 Km of rolling terrain under these conditions!

Many of us tried to draft the 1st pack, going in excess of 40 Km/H – bad idea! The likes of ‘newbie’ Flo and Dr. EPO Siong were something else altogether. Then again, Flo is a mountain-biker-turned-roadie a la CADEL EVANS while Dr. Siong is ostensibly on EPO (the performance-enhancing drug erythropoietin). BAD DOCTOR! :P

But if you thought their cycling was crazy, think again! While most of us were huffing and puffing, budding videographer ShyGuy Scott was casually riding up and down the group snapping pictures of everyone! If you noticed, this superlative only had one chainring on his bike – THE BIG ONE! Off the grapevine, word has it that Peter Woo drafted a car! He had a slight scrape from his adventure when the car braked but my boat-mates wondered if he was focusing on something else – perhaps a pretty young lass. That seems more plausible than drafting a car don’t you think? Or perhaps he was doing both!

On another note, I’m sure we were happy to reach the golf course after the first half. Water, delectable ice kacang and cans of 100 Plus made our hundred-plus kilometer route less daunting right? That is until someone said, as we retrieved our bikes, “we’ll be taking the same route back”. “Same route ah? Heh hEh heH…” and soon the rest of us started laughing in that happily exhausted manner. A swig of water later, we were once again proving that the golfers were of sounder mind. Thankfully, Douglas gave us a Grand, exotic seafood lunch to dash towards (what was in that curry dish?)! Now we know who should plan the next JR post-race meal! (*Hint hint!*)

All in all, I daresay we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly on this trip. The arduous route and elemental, wind-sun conspiracy only served to enhance the sweetness of our victory. Take a look at your hands and legs – your victory stripes are branded where your shorts, sleeves and watchbands end. Well done to all Desaru Veterans! Now, who’s up for Genting??

Taiwan Central Cross Island Ride 2010

E-mail Print PDF

30th April‐ 4th May 2010

After the last re‐group next to the high point of Sun Moon Lake (日月潭) in central Taiwan and a final group photo. We continue our last 10km to the superb five stars Fleur De Chine hotel located on a small hill feature within the Sun Moon Lake district to enjoy our hot SPA, lunch and celebrate our achievement of consecutive four days of central Cross Island cycling from Taipei (台北) to Taichung (台中) before heading back to Taipei.

Originally intended training ride to prepare a small group of four riders for the upcoming Etape 2010 in July in France Alp, this eventually turned out with thirteen cyclists from eight countries (America; England; Germany; Hong Kong; Indonesia; Japan; Scotland and Singapore) coming together for this Taiwan central cross island ride. [Ed: Our heroes were: Alan Cannon, Larry Sperling, Peter Downs, Hadisan Sridjaja, Otto Rusil, Lee Hoi Ming, Mayumi Morihiro & Yoshitaka Ichikawa, Martin & Madelaine Roennebeck, Alvin Goh, David Newlands and yours truly.]

The 4-day ride included a warm up ride; two days high intensive climb and a recovery ride on the last day covering a total distance of 400km, including 7,000m climb. Some of us soon found out that the route was meant for the expert level, and was not for the faint hearted cyclist. Take for example the warm up ride involved climb up to 1400m. Our original cravings for good Taiwanese feast; massage and to enjoy the beautiful Taipei scenery were swiftly replaced and overwhelm with the pain from the endless climb…..Ha!

PCC Interstate Ride 2010

E-mail Print PDF
This is the first time some of us are taking part in the PCC Interstate Ride and was told this year it is the toughest in terms of terrain.  The event covers a total of 475km in 3 days over 3 Malaysian States  - Perak, Kelantan and Trengganu.

Thursday  - April 29 –  Coach from Spore to Perak River Side Resort, Kuala Kangsar

Room-mates – Dr. Squeaky Bird Emril and ‘PP’ Eve who are also ‘PCC virgins’.
Makan buddies – Casey Kwan, Albert Yeo, Mike Tan, Roger Hague, Roy Chua, Vincent Lee, David Chua - West Pack Riders aka West Pack Joy-Eaters?
Riding buddy – SeedoubleYou Choon Wei

For dinner that evening, joined West Pack Riders to East Ocean, Menglembu near Ipoh for the finest Cantonese cuisine.

That was the highlight of my trip besides the toughest hill on the last day ride to Kenyir Dam!

Day 1 – Friday, April 30, 7am - Banding LakeSide Inn, Pulau Banding – 137km to Kota Bahru.

A wet start but it was so beautiful riding along the green, green, green grass of kampong homes.  Hardly any traffic and the roads were wide.  Rolling slopes and about 20k of temperature hot climb to Pulau Banding with some scary decent behind ‘PP’ Eve!  She thought she was saying her last prayer!

For recovery dinner, I escaped with West Pack Riders to Gerik and have the BEST steamed catfish ever!
Next time, we will have one each instead!

Day 2 – Sat, May 1st, From Pulau Banding to Grand RiverView Hotel, Kota Bahru – 177.6k

We gathered @ 6.30am just before the bridge and climbed about 30k up to the top.  The climb was relatively easy since it was cooler and we were all fresh!  Once we got to the top, we were in seven heavens!  Refilled, toilets stop, some photos and off we go!

Rode 7 hours and was bored riding in the heat.  Traffic was heavier as we were near civilization.  Disco Johnson Duck found me and we stopped for lunch as I was starving!   After lunch Johnson and I hooked up with Ipoh riders and had a great time drafting them and sharing their coca-cola.  They were super, helpful, motivating and fun!

Dinner was @ some Teochew restaurant with West Pack Joy-Eaters

Day 3 – Sunday, May 2nd – from Kota Bahru to Lake Kenyir Resort & Spa, Trengganu – 161km

The last day was fun; I got to draft SeeDoubleYou Choon Wei after we left Kota Bahru. Both of us had a great time over-taking riders and the peloton train.  Choon Wei was on fire and he was chucking along.  We stopped for toilet and got a bottle of coke.  Discovered too much coke was bad for me.  Our next stop, we met some KL riders, Ewan from Independent Riders and they were very helpful too.  They shared their 100Plus and even spray water on us to keep us cool!

Only 15k after the left turn to Kenyir Dam, sounds short but it was no fun with the heat and the steep hills.  At that moment, it was tougher than Genting climb and the hot weather certainly didn’t help.

I was determined not to stop until I get to the Resort!  Finally got to the Resort main entrance and was glad we don’t have to ride anymore tomorrow!

A great sense of achievement as I always wanted to visit Kenyir Dam and experience the East West highway of Peninsular Malaysia!

Dinner was @ the resort and everyone who completed the whole route knows that this is something money cannot buy!

Day 4 - May 3 - Coach back to Singapore

Next year, I am recommending that more JoyRiders join this event and I will be reserving for @ least 25 riders so that we can go by coach!
